The Lightspeed Zulu 4 is the latest generation of Lightspeed’s best-selling ANR headset line, aimed at pilots who want top-tier noise reduction and comfort without the added safety instrumentation of the Delta Zulu. It’s the natural upgrade for a Zulu 3 owner and a strong first premium headset for a pilot moving up from a passive or entry-level ANR unit.
Three changes define this generation. Dual Bluetooth holds two devices connected at the same time — phone and tablet, for instance — with no re-pairing between them. FrameFit ear seals use a lighter-density foam at the top of the seal, where glasses arms and cap brims break the seal on conventional cups; the result is a consistent seal whether or not you fly with sunglasses. And enhanced upstream processing removes up to 90% of cabin background noise from outgoing Bluetooth audio, so the person on the other end of a phone call hears you rather than the engine.
Smaller refinements: a mic boom 10% longer, a longer upper cable, and a more flexible power lead for panel-powered installations.
Construction is stainless steel and magnesium with Kevlar-cored cables, 14.9 oz including ear seals, head pad, and mic boom. Zulu 4 or Delta Zulu — which should I buy?
Both use Lightspeed’s top ANR platform and share the same build, weight, and 7-year warranty. Delta Zulu adds a cabin carbon monoxide sensor, HearingEQity per-ear hearing personalization, and a swappable battery cartridge. Zulu 4 adds Dual Bluetooth, FrameFit ear seals, and improved outgoing call audio. Choose Delta Zulu if the CO sensor and hearing personalization matter to you; choose Zulu 4 for the best comfort-and-comms package at a lower price.
Is it worth upgrading from a Zulu 3?
It depends on what bothers you about the Zulu 3. If you fly with sunglasses or a cap and fight the seal, FrameFit is the single biggest reason to upgrade. If you take business calls in the air, the outbound noise reduction is the other. If neither applies, a Zulu 3 in good condition still performs well and the upgrade is optional.
What does Dual Bluetooth actually change?
You can keep two devices paired and connected at once — typically a phone for calls and a tablet running your EFB for traffic and terrain alerts. On a single-connection headset you have to disconnect one to use the other. A2DP is supported, so music streams in stereo.
Which configuration do I need — Dual GA, LEMO, or U-174?
Dual GA (twin plugs) fits most piston GA aircraft. LEMO is the six-pin panel-powered jack in many newer Cirrus, Cessna, and Diamond aircraft and in retrofit installs.
